Welcome

The National Association of Registered Petsitters is unique. As the largest Pet Care organisation in the UK we are involved primarily with the proper care of Pets and Property and we set the standards for the Pet and House sitting industries.

We also represent our members at Local and National Government level, with particular interest in all legislation which affects the Petcare Industry and Animal Welfare in general.

National Petsitters are funded entirely by subscriptions which we try to keep as low as possible to the benefit of all members and subscribers.

Over the past 13 years The National Association of Registered Petsitters has registered more than 8,000 petsitters throughout the country. Members offer a range of caring petsitting services while owners are away on holiday or at work etc.

Home Boarding

You take your dog or other pets to the sitter where they will receive individual care and attention with all the comforts of home. (Petsitters will normally care for all domestic pets including small animals and birds.)

House Sitting

The sitter goes to your home and looks after your house and your pets. This is very useful for those who do not want to leave their home unattended, or for those who have a lot of pets.

Daycare or Dogwalking

This is self-explanatory and is ideal for those who are out at work all day and need someone to feed or walk their pets.

Need a petsitter?

You should subscribe to The National Register of Petsitters which lists the names and phone numbers of all members so you can contact them direct.

The cost is just £9.99 for a year or £19.95 for a lifetime subscription. The subscription allows you to download the latest Register at any time during your subscription period.

You pay your sitter direct at a rate agreed between you, which obviously depends upon what you need.

How much will the service cost?

The national average cost of boarding a dog with one of our members starts at around £12 for 24 hours. The cost of house sitting starts at around £30 for 24 hours (plus expenses). Walking a dog from £5. (All depending upon time required and variable factors such as who provides the food etc.)

Want to become a petsitter?

You must be reliable, trustworthy and experienced at caring for pets. We provide everything you need to start your own business at minimal cost.

Petsitting is very rewarding: it provides the fun of caring for dogs and other pets, the social reward of meeting new people, and the benefit of being paid. You can earn £50 to £400+ per week, depending upon which services you offer.

Pet boarding

You might like to take a dog or other pets in to board or you might prefer to "sit" in clients' homes, or maybe offer a daily dog walking service, or small animal care; or maybe a combination of all these and related services such as grooming or training.

The choice is yours, but in any event you are not obliged to take on any assignments if you do not want to. Some National Association of Registered Petsitters members "sit" on occasional weekends, whilst others make it a full time occupation with many regular clients.

Please note, however, that whilst you will be paid, the National Association of Registered Petsitters is concerned primarily for the welfare of animals. Financial reward is secondary.

Our insurance is the best available

If you are already running a petsitting business, you should apply. Many professional petsitters join, particularly for our insurance which is the best available, for a listing on the Register, and for the prestige and credibility gained from membership of a National Association.

Please note that The National Association of Registered Petsitters offers special membership terms to experienced/professional sitters either to include our insurance, or without for those who already have cover in place.

Your own petsitting business for £490

The National Association of Registered Petsitters provides the essentials for you to run your own petsitting business in a complete package containing forms of authority, terms and conditions, advice notes and information, printed cards, Registration Certificate and 12 months' listing in the National Register of Petsitters.

Also Included with The National Association of Registered Petsitters membership is £2 million Insurance which is vital (see below)

AND an informal visit in the comfort of your own home given by one of our Representatives covering practical information on how to set up your petsitting business, including: Quoting Charges, Payments, Bookings, Terms and Conditions, Public Liability, Third Party and Animal Insurance, Responsibilities, Accidents, The Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963 and the Clean Neighbourhoods & Environment Act 2005, Advice and Tips for members, and how to earn extra money from related services.

NARP does not presume to teach people about how to care for pets; experience is a basic requirement of membership. We do however cover the practicalities of the work, and in particular we try to answer your "What happens if......." questions.

Please note The National Association of Registered Petsitters is not an agency and whilst it is not our function to provide you with work we do enlist your name, telephone number and the services your petsitting business offers on the National Register of Petsitters so that subscribers can contact you direct; we also explain how best to promote your services economically. We are here to help you.

If you are already running your own Petsitting / Petcare / Dog Walking business etc as an individual the cost is the same and you will receive the same benefits including the visit from a NARP representative but this will take the form of an introduction to the Association together with any advice or help that you may need. If you are running an Agency or business with the help of staff/carers/helpers then please apply for NARP Agency membership (see membership types).

£2,000,000 Insurance

When you care for other people's pets you need Insurance. We all hope that nothing will ever go wrong, but if it does, damages to people, property and animals could run to thousands of pounds and YOU could be held liable. Insurance brings peace of mind to you and your petsitting business AND to the owners who entrust you with their best friends. The National Association of Registered Petsitters has a group policy which covers all our members for Public Liability and Third Party Risks up to £2 million any one claim, including cover for pets in your care up to £5000.00. (An excess of £250 applies to pet injury/loss/damage claims. "Non" petsitting services such as Grooming, Training or Pet Taxi are not covered). As a member you will be covered under this NARP Group policy. A summary of benefits provided by this policy will be included in your Certificate of Membership.

Rating Review:

Full marks to The National Association of Registered Petsitters for clarity of presentation.

You can expect a petsitting business to build up nicely by word of mouth recommendation. And membership of The National Association of Registered Petsitters should get your petsitting business off to a good start, not only by inspiring customer confidence and having the correct forms and other documentation, but also by having an initial visit to show you the ropes, with the ongoing benefit of the comprehensive insurance.

You need to be a calm, efficient and reliable person who likes domestic animals and who has the necessary time to devote to a petsitting business - whether just dogwalking during the day, or pet boarding or house and pet sitting.

House and petsitting combined is a service which is increasingly in demand - because it solves many of the worries people face when going on holiday e.g. worry that the house will be burgled in their absence, worries about the stress caused to their pets from going into kennels/catteries etc, what to do about the pot plants and hanging baskets, what if there's a burst pipe ... etc.

If you fit the bill - whether you just want to do afternoon dog walking or full-blown house and petsitting - we recommend that you visit The National Association of Registered Petsitters website for more information and advice on setting up a petsitting business.

You may also be interested in a new book from How To Books called "How to Start and Run a Petsitting Business". The book is written by Fiona Mackenzie, who has over 12 years' experience as a petsitter and who previously worked with the National Association of Registered Petsitters as one of their advisors, who went around the country training and advising petsitters nationwide.

In the course of my research into the National Petsitters, I came across another association which seems to be trying to do the same thing. This other association is called NARDS (now called NarpsUK) and it has a web site at www.nards.co.uk (now www.narpsuk.co.uk). NARDS / NarpsUK seems to have gone online in October 2007, the same time that the company running it - Nards Limited - was formed.

NARDS / NarpsUK is run by a lady called Marilyn Lewis. She previously had many years' experience with a company called Home From Home Dog Boarding Agency Ltd, which is said to be "the largest dog boarding agency of its kind in the UK ... and specializes in boarding dogs in family homes and holds a register of over 280 dog carers throughout the Greater London area". Marilyn Lewis recently sold this business and set up NARDS, and she also has a new venture called the TIC Coffee Shop which she runs with her daughter in the Thames Innovation Centre in Erith, Kent.

NARDS / NarpsUK is cheaper than the National Association of Registered Petsitters, at just £49.99 a year - but it doesn't include insurance and it doesn't include the initial home visit to help you to get started.

Otherwise, NARDS / NarpsUK looks very similar to the National Association of Registered Petsitters. The NARDS / NarpsUK website says, "NARDS was initially conceived as a result of the lack of sound guidelines, ethics and accountability in the dog caring industry, here in the UK". This is odd because "sound guidelines, ethics and accountability" are exactly what the National Association of Registered Petsitters has been providing since 1993!

It's even more odd that the NARDS / NarpsUK Terms and Conditions and Code of Practice - which contain the "sound guidelines, ethics and accountability" which NARDS / NarpsUK claims were lacking - are just about identical word-for-word to those of the National Association of Registered Petsitters!

NARDS stands for the rather awkward-sounding name of the Nationwide Associates of Registered Dog Sitters. I doubted that this was the name originally chosen by the company and it seems I was right, because in October and November 2007 the website at www.nards.co.uk said that it belonged to the National Association of Registered Dog Sitters. Perhaps the National Association of Registered Petsitters objected to a name which was so similar to their own and Marilyn Lewis had to change hers?

All I can say is 'copy cat'.

If I were giving a rating to NARDS / NarpsUK it would be 4 out of 10 because NARDS / NarpsUK does not display the same level of professionalism that comes across with the National Petsitters, and it doesn't include the insurance and the initial home visit. Also, it's not been long established, and the lady who runs it presumably has substantial time commitments with her new cafe venture.

By contrast, I rate the National Association of Registered Petsitters at 8 out of 10.

Rating:

●●●●●●●●○○

Update October 2010:
The alternative association, NARDS, which I think only deserves 4 out of 10 has changed its name yet again. It now calls itself the Nationwide Associates of Registered Pet Sitters, with a website at www.narpsuk.co.uk, where Marilyn Lewis says that "NarpsUK is a name you can trust for a pet sitting business".

Feedback January 2011 from Marilyn Lewis of NARPS UK:

Marilyn Lewis, who runs NarpsUK, sent us this feedback:

"Hello my name is Marilyn Lewis and I run NarpsUK which was previously called Nards Ltd. NarpsUK is a membership organisation for pet sitters across the UK.

NarpsUK provide a variety of services to our ever growing member base which provides a robust framework for people thinking about pet sitting to start their own business or already run a pet sitting or dog walking service.

The NarpsUK website contains a wealth of information on pet-sitting and if you are a pet owner looking to find a pet sitter, access to our database of pet sitters is completely free of charge to search.

NarpsUK is an open and transparent organisation and are passionate about pets. My drive and mission for NarpsUK is that I want to help the pet sitting industry to move forward but in a direction of business professionalism.

In December 2010 we actually won the Virtual Business Awards which looked to seek out the best Virtual Companies in the UK. This prestigious award recognised our contribution to virtual businesses and our business proposition – please verify this at www.vbawards.com

My experience as a hands on manager of Home from Home dog boarding agency for 14 years allows me to use the knowledge over this time to develop NarpsUK into the successful business it is today.

I have been involved actively in meetings with DEFRA about the Animal Welfare Bill and various other senior officials with regarding to changes in the legislation regarding Home Boarding Licenses. Although I was heavily involved in discussions and presentations at the time fighting the corner for pet sitters throughout the UK I felt my expertise was in starting and growing a successful pet sitting business and not being so heavily involved in government legislation.

NarpsUK is here to help people who want to start or already run a pet sitting business by helping them to make it as structured, professional and easy for them as possible. We also want potential pet sitters to understand the massive responsibility that it is to board or pet sit people’s animals.

I am very disappointed to have read this article which portrays my organisation in a negative and unprofessional light although I welcome the chance to add this comment.

NarpsUK was formerly called Nards Ltd. This change was simply due many of our members being cat sitters and I felt that NarpsUK would be more appropriate to both our members and people looking for pet sitters. I have not tried to hide this change and you will see from our home page of our website that we actually reference the fact that we were formally called Nards Ltd. This is actually very common in the business place today in which ironically “Business Opportunity Watch” used to be called “The Board”.

To further echo the comment about being open and transparent; on the NarpsUK website we have a section called “What our Members Say”. This contains quotes sent in by our members on what they think of the organisation and these comments are unedited. NarpsUK is also registered to process a CRB Disclosure application that allows our members to access a valuable document that can aid them in securing clients. This is especially useful if their client wants them to pet sit in their own home.

NarpsUK is also affiliated with an insurance company which members can purchase if they require, but this is entirely their decision.

In summary I welcome any comments on our service our business offering if required.

My drive and ambition is to make NarpsUK grow and become the number one organisation for people looking to start up as a pet sitter.

Yours sincerely,
Marilyn Lewis
NarpsUK Ltd"

Feedback February 2011 from Marilyn Lewis of NARPS UK:

Hi Marian,

I'm pleased to tell you that I have just been given a fellowship from the I.S.A.P 'International Society of Animal Professionals' for the work and contribution I have given to the pet sitting industry.

Yours sincerely
Marilyn Lewis
